They say the little things matter in business—politeness, prompt service, maybe even free coffee in the waiting lounge. But I’d like to add one more to that list: a bathroom that doesn’t make you question all your life choices.

Let’s talk contenders: SmartLube Car Care Center vs. JLB Car Clinic Center.

SmartLube Car Care Center

Now, my husband swears by SmartLube for oil changes. He loves their MultiPoint inspection, he appreciates how polite and courteous the staff are, and yes—the air-conditioned lounge makes the wait a little less painful. The staff even look the part—uniforms and all—so you know who actually works there and who’s just killing time.

But then… there’s the bathroom.

Sure, they have separate male and female restrooms, which sounds promising… until you realize you have to fill a bucket with water outside the bathroom before you can use it.

Outside.

As in, in full view of everyone in the lounge.

Now, picture this: you’ve just downed your favorite Starbucks coffee, your stomach suddenly stages a rebellion, and you have to do the dreaded walk of shame with a bucket of water in hand. Not for a casual pee, oh no—your audience knows exactly what’s about to go down.

That, my friends, is the kind of trauma that sticks. I’m not exaggerating when I say it has shaped my future decisions. Whenever my husband suggests SmartLube, I either convince him to go alone or I suddenly remember other places we could be. The service is good—great even—but my bathroom PTSD says “no, thank you.”

JLB Car Clinic Center

Now, JLB also offers solid service. The main difference? The mechanics don’t usually talk to you directly—at least not in our case. My theory? They’re avoiding what most Filipinos call a “nosebleed” situation—having to speak English with my husband. So, instead, the owner and Ronel Llupar do all the talking. And honestly, that works just fine.

Their lounge area is comfortable, air-conditioned, and best of all—the bathroom situation is exactly what a customer bathroom should be: clean, functional, and mercifully private. No bucket parades. No unspoken bathroom confessions to strangers.

The only downside compared to SmartLube? The staff at JLB don’t wear uniforms, so unless you catch them mid-repair, you might not know who actually works there.

My Verdict

Uniforms are nice. Polite staff are nice. Air conditioning is nice.

But when you’re waiting for your car, knowing you have access to a real restroom is priceless. For me, that makes JLB Car Clinic the winner. Because in the hierarchy of customer service, avoiding public bathroom humiliation should be right up there with fixing the actual car.
